If you’ve been thinking about getting PMP® certified, you’re already on the right path. It proves you have the skills, experience, and mindset to lead projects successfully, no matter the industry.
But before you jump into exam prep and course materials, there’s one important question you should be asking:
“How much does it actually cost to get PMP certified?”
It’s a smart question—and one that deserves a clear answer.
From exam fees and training costs to study materials and renewal charges, the total investment can vary quite a bit depending on the path you choose. And understanding these details upfront can help you avoid surprises and plan your journey with confidence.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the full breakdown of PMP certification costs in 2025, so you know exactly what to expect—and how to make the most of every dollar you spend.
At the core of your PMP journey is the exam, and it’s not free. The cost depends on whether you’re a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI), the global body that offers the certification.
PMI Members: $425
Non-Members: $675
This fee covers one attempt. If you don’t pass on your first try, you’ll need to pay a re-examination fee (more on that below).
The Cost of PMP Training (35 Contact Hours)
One of the mandatory requirements to apply for the PMP exam is 35 hours of formal project management education. Most candidates fulfil this through a PMP prep course. The training cost can vary significantly depending on the format, features, and provider.

PMP Certification Process
Step 1: Make Sure You Meet the Eligibility Criteria
Before you begin your application, take a moment to ensure you meet the required qualifications. This includes:
The right combination of education and professional project management experience
A minimum of 35 contact hours of formal project management training
You can easily fulfil the training requirement through structured programs—like the PMP certification training course offered by UpBuild Academy.
Step 2: Submit Your PMP Application
Once you’re eligible, head over to the official PMI website to start your application.
Here’s what you’ll need to do:
Create an account on the PMI portal
Fill out your application, including details about your academic background, project management experience, and completed training
Wait for review and approval, which usually takes around 5–10 business days
⚠️Heads-up: PMI may randomly select applications for an eligibility audit.
If that happens, you’ll need to provide the following:
A copy of your degree certificate
Proof of project management experience (typically signed by your supervisor)
A certificate of your completed training hours
Step 3: Pay the PMP Certification Exam Fee
Once your application is approved, you’ll receive a notification to proceed with the PMP exam fee payment. After payment, you’ll be able to schedule your exam.
Step 4: Schedule the PMP Exam
You can choose to take the PMP exam online or at a nearby authorized test center. The exam is available throughout the year, so you can pick a date and time that suits your schedule best.
Step 5: Take Mock Exams, Appear for PMP Exam and Pass PMP
This is where your PMP exam preparation kicks in. Take plenty of mock exams, review your study materials, and get comfortable with the exam structure.
Here’s what to expect on exam day:
180 questions in total
A mix of question types: multiple-choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and more
230 minutes to complete the exam
16 languages option
Two 10-minute breaks
Once you pass, congratulations—you’re officially a PMP-certified professional!

Who is Eligible for PMP® Certification?
Before you start the journey toward PMP certification, it’s important to check if you meet the eligibility criteria set by PMI (Project Management Institute). The good news? You don’t need to have “Project Manager” in your job title—but you do need real-world experience leading and directing projects.
PMI offers two eligibility paths, depending on your educational background:
If You Have a Four-Year Degree (Bachelor’s or Equivalent):
Project Management Experience: Minimum 36 months (3 years) of experience leading projects
Project Management Education:35 contact hours of formal project management training (Or a CAPM® certification in place of the 35 hours)
If You Have a High School Diploma or an Associate’s Degree:
Project Management Experience: Minimum 60 months (5 years) of experience leading projects
Project Management Education:35 contact hours of formal project management training (Or CAPM® certification in place of the 35 hours)
For Postgraduate or Master’s Degree Holders
Project Management Experience: A minimum of 24 months of project management experience.
Project Management Education: Again, 35 hours of project management education.
What Counts as “Project Management Experience”?
You don’t need to have the title of “Project Manager” to qualify. Read more details here.
Is PMP Certification Cost Worth the Investment?
Absolutely. While the total cost of certification may seem like a big commitment, PMP-certified professionals often report higher salaries, greater job stability, and global recognition in their field.
If you’re serious about project management as a career, think of the PMP as an investment in your future—not just a test. With the right plan and preparation, it can be one of the most rewarding career moves you make in 2025.
